Pablo Picasso's death in 1973 set off one of the most complicated estate dramas in art history. Despite being one of the wealthiest and most prolific artists of the 20th century (with over 45,000 works to his name), he died without a will.

The result? Years of bitter legal battles between his widow, children (some from different relationships), and other heirs. It took six years and millions of dollars in legal fees to resolve his estate. His heirs were forced to inventory his massive body of work, settle inheritance taxes, and negotiate with the French government - who took some of his most iconic pieces in lieu of tax payment, forming the basis of the Musée Picasso in Paris.

Corporate art collections carry more than aesthetic value. They represent brand identity, cultural alignment, and long-term investment. But for many collections, especially those built over decades or acquired through multiple stakeholders, the systems supporting them have not evolved at the same pace as the assets themselves.

Most museum and corporate collections have invested heavily in cataloguing and conservation, but when it comes to tracking the movement of artworks, many still rely on inconsistent practices, informal approvals, or disconnected spreadsheets. The weak point in these systems? An inadequate or nonexistent Chain-of-Custody.

When an artwork moves - whether across town or across the world - the risks increase. Loss, damage, insurance disputes, and reputational exposure often trace back to one issue: the absence of a clear, auditable record of custody.
